Surviving Black Friday 2019
Black Friday is approaching faster than we all expected! We’re all gearing up for the biggest sales period of the year and we’re here to help you get ready! Read on to find out about Black Friday and how to survive Black Friday on a budget.
What is Black Friday?
The crazy sales event will take place this year on Friday 29 November. However, the sales will carry on through to Cyber Monday, the following Monday 2 December.
The tradition began in the US and was used to describe the day after Thanksgiving due to a large number of shoppers causing chaos and disruption on the roads leading to danger for pedestrians. Despite the problems of Black Friday the sales period grew and grew leading to the tradition crossing over the pond and impacting the UK in 2010.
Since 2010 the Black Friday period has grown and grown, it has lead to many companies involving themselves in the promotional offers. So much so, in 2017, according to SaleCycle, 91% of UK retailers provided offers around the Black Friday period, resulting in approximately £1.39 billion worth of sales. This amount increased to £1.49 billion in 2018.
How to survive Black Friday: Budgeting Tips
Below are five tips to help you organise and prepare yourself and finances for Black Friday. Take a look and follow our tips…
1. Do your research
Doing your research is very important, especially when it comes to spending money. The big question is, are you actually saving any money? Once you’ve decided what you want to buy, keep your eye on the price to make sure you are getting a good deal.
Along with this, some deals are too good to be true, some deals lure you in thinking they’re good and some should be completely avoided. Doing your research in time for the sales will help you to understand where the best, most reliable deals will be coming from.
2. Look out for sales and discounts
Subscribing to mailing lists and newsletters always result in a win-win situation. They might mean that you’re then more likely to be opened up to exclusive sales and early access to the biggest deals from your favourite online brands.
Which makes it ever so easy to keep on top of any early-bird offers and special discounts accessible online that you may miss in-store.
3. Get organised
Being organised during Black Friday is definitely the best thing you could do. Why not try making a list of what you need to make sure you don’t overspend or buy anything you don’t need? This is always a common mistake people make leading them to regret purchasing they made. According to Finder, last year, 21% of Brits purchased something on Black Friday or Cyber Monday that they later regretted. You wouldn’t want to be in that position, would you?
Along with creating a list, you also need to set a budget. This will help you to ensure you don’t buy unnecessary items. When you’re setting your budget you need to make sure you are being realistic and double-check you can afford to spend what you’re planning on doing.
4. Wake up and beat the crowds
As we all know, not all the things we want to buy are unlimited and things do sell out at the most inconvenient times. To have a higher chance of getting your hands on what you want this Black Friday, make sure to wake up early and get to your closest store to beat the crowds, or even stay up late and access the stores online before it’s too late and it’s sold out.
5. Ask for receipts
Linking to regretful and unnecessary purchases, make sure you ask for a receipt in case you want to return an item you bought. Also, don’t forget that if you are buying anything as a gift, you can also ask for a gift receipt if necessary. This can be essential when trying to survive Black Friday!
